THE HUNGER GAMESby Suzanne Collins
Reading Schedule
Chap. 1-4 June 28 Chap 5-7 July 1 (discuss) Chap 9-11 July 3
Chap 12-14 July 6 (discuss) Chap 15-16. July 9 Chap 17-20 July 12 (discuss) Chap 21-23 July 15 Chap 24-26 July 18 (discuss) Chap 27 July 21 *July 24- Final discussion!
*Come up with atleast 3 questions or things you thought surprising or interesting over the last few chapters you read.
Topics to think about as you read (I came up with these ideas, but you're welcome to talk about more!)
1. Symbolism and what it symbolizes (think of these things: Bread, flowers, berries, etc) There's tons of things you can do for this!
2. Themes: (There are LOTS! Just think!) Here are some conflicts you can think about as you read. How does this conflict relate to the book? Can you turn one of these conflicts into a theme? Explain it. Youth Vs. Age, Man Vs. Nature, Man vs. Man, Man vs. society
Ex: Man vs. Society- theme: How you present yourself to the world is important.
•Tributes had to make themselves be unforgettable before the Games. Sponsors were a key in surviving, but to get sponsors, tributes had to be liked and remembered. The "star crossed lovers" act was a way to capture the audience and want more.
Survival of the fittest- The wealthier tend to succeed more than others in poverty.
3. What do you think of these "games" held every year? Are there really "winners" in the Hunger Games?
4. What do you think the author is trying to say about our future? (hint: think of our entertainment people enjoy today.) Happy Reading!

In the first chapter, we get the image of the society in which Katniss lives. Katniss lives in a dystopia, where the government monitors all the actions of its' citizens, punishing any kind of wrong doing. A huge thing that I noticed in the first few chapters is the inequality between the wealthier and the more poor. The wealthier districts (Districts 1 and 2) get the good way of living; good food, training, and education. However, Katniss' district (District 12), struggles with famine and health. Katniss' father, who died in a mining incident, had a close relationship with her. Once he died, her mother seemed to stay locked up in her room everyday. She wouldn't care for Katniss and her little sister Prim. Katniss, who was less than 16 years old, had to become the caretaker to keep her family alive. She would sneak past her district boundaries and go into the woods, hunting for game. When her dad was alive, she learned many tips and ways of the forest, one of which was using a bow and arrow. Katniss would get tessarae for making food, but in return offer her name into the Hunger Games twice as much.
A GIANT symbolism I saw was in chapter 3, when Madge gives Katniss the mockingjay pin as the district token she could take to the Capitol. The Capitol's idea of the Mockingjays were created from the breeding of Mockingbirds and Jabberjays. They were used to spy on the rebels in the districts, however, the rebels would use false information to send back to the Capitol. The Capitol quiet breeding them, but they still existed. Madge giving this pin to Katniss was the first sign of rebellion.
Questions
1. How do you think the helpful lessons Katniss' dad taught her about the forest would have an affect on how Katniss does in The Hunger Games?
We are introduced to the District 12's ONLY victor, Haymitch Abernathy, who is drunk most of the time. When we see how he talks to the tributes, Katniss and Peeta, he sames careless at first. Noting that District 12 is the poorest district, tributes of the past usually are the ones killed and less important to the viewers. Maybe Haymitch has decided to not take it that seriously anymore. However, his advice for Katniss and Peeta being the tributes who matched costumes and held hands was a brilliant idea for rebellion.
1. What do you think of Haymitch as the mentor of these two tributes?
Katniss has a flashback of the Avox girl. We read the story of the event that happened. 1. Do you think Katniss could have saved the Avox? 2. What did you think of the story of this girl?

Yay! Book dicussion! Okay, first off, in response to your questions: 1. Well, The Hunger Games is a fight to the death, and she has the knowledge of how to use a bow and arrow...sooo coming from an extremely poor district and not really having any training to kill any living thing other than her family's food for the night, I'd say that's a pretty good skill! The thing is, in the book, Katniss says she couldn't shake the feeling of having to kill anything other than her game in the woods. Gale told her to just think that the other tributes are her game and the arena as her woods, but she didn't want to just loose sight of the fact that they are humans. She was scared, even, to become a hunter of men. 2. No matter what others say (and no matter how much he drinks), I actually think Haymitch is a decent mentor for Katniss and Peeta. When he first met met the two in the train, they were as scared as ever! I think he was still in his ritual of seeing these kids come in for advice before the arena, and then just die because they weren't able to defend or fight for themselves anyway. Haymitch is arrogant because he's the ONLY victor from district 12, but he still has respect for the game. That respect came out when he saw that Peeta and Katniss were fighters! He said he'd sober up to give them advice! 3. I don't think Katniss could've really saved the Avox without revaling herself. The Avox was being punished for something; something big enough that they cut off her tounge and killed the boy. 4. Her story is extremely short and mysterious. Why was she out in the woods? Why was her tounge cut off?
Here are 3 interesting things/questions I came up with:
- I found it kinda ironic that Peeta is a baker's son. Pita is a type of bread. Wouldn't it be funny if his dad was named Weet (wheat) or Rie (Rye)? Random, but it pondered me.
- Also speaking of Peeta and to put this in a Catholic sense, Peeta is literally the Bread of Life to Katniss. He gave her a loaf when she was starving, and he did it out of his own pain (after he was hurt by his mother); just like Christ. Could Peeta be Katniss' lifeline yet again in the arena?
- I noticed two tones toward the capitol: A glorious paradise/haven, and a scary over-ruling place. As read in the book, the Capitol is a very powerful government. They punish before a blink, and they do whatever they please. On the other hand, everyone is so bubbly! The tributes must think of it as some kind of heaven before their ultimate death! Like, why is the Capitol portraying this happy costume when the rest of the people know the ugly truth?

Good analysis, Debbie! To answer your questions, I find it funny and ironic Suzanne Collins picked names for characters that could relate to themselves in some ways. Peeta= "Pita" bread, and Peeta works at the bakery. HA. HA. Katniss = a plant, and Katniss knows what plants are edible in the wilderness. Primrose = a flower, Innocent as Prim. I think she did this on purpose! Also, very good comparison to Peeta being the Bread of Life to Katniss. It could give us hints that he MAY be of some help in Katniss surviving the Games. The Capitol thinks of the The Hunger Games as this festivity of the year, and should be celebrated with honory and excitement. HOLY CRAP! Chapters 8-14 got so intense! The Games have actually begun! In the interviews with Caesar Flickerman, Peeta reveals his secret crush for Katniss, making the crowd go NUTS. This will obviously make The Star Crossed Lovers of District 12 very entertaining to see during the Games, getting more sponsors to support these two lovers having to kill eachother. 1. Do you think Peeta really meant it? Or, do you think it was just part of the Games, making Katniss more vulnerable for the viewers? The balcony scene, one of my favorite scenes in the book, Peeta and Katniss sit there together the night before the Games. One of my favorite quotes by Peeta is, “I don’t know how to say it exactly. Only…I want to die as myself. Does that make any sense?” “I don’t want them to change me in there. Turn me into some kind of monster that I’m not.” " Only I keep wishing I could think of a way to…to show the Capitol they don’t own me. That I’m more than just a piece in their Games,” says Peeta. (10.71)" 1. What do you think he's saying here? Peeta seems to be the stand out character in these few chapters. We find out that Peeta ALLIED with the Career tributes! The ONLY reason he's still alive and not getting killed by the Careers, is because he is the key to finding Katniss. However, we knows these facts:1. The Careers don't know about Katniss' skill with the bow and arrow, Peeta hasn't told them. 2. Peeta has planned to ally with the enemies, but we aren't sure how he even talked to them about it 3. Peeta previously declared his love for Katniss, and now the world is on the edge of their seats, seeing Peeta has joined the Careers to hunt down his lover. 4. Peeta SAVED Katniss after the tracker jacker incident, pushing her to leave before Cato saw her.
What do you think Peeta's plan is and strategy for the Games is? Do you think it's a good plan?

OH MY WORD! You're exactly correct, Rachel! The Games are intense! Dude, I'm saying this now: I Love Rue. She's the cutest little thing and she definitely helps Katniss feel at ease as Rue probably reminds her of Prim. Like, no joke; I want Rue to be my daughter! I must admit, I've read ahead...She just made my heart want to wrap around hers and hug her! Okay enough fangirling. Time to discuss the bloodbath.
Ugh. Poor Peeta. I know he's doing all this for Katniss. His mom said that they may actually have a winner, and, once realizing it wasn't him, I immediately saw that he was doing everything for the good of Katniss. He said he likes her because if he says he sees something more in her than a person, sponsors are bound to look at her as more of a winner. She has the qualities, now people need to notice them! I don't actually know if he really meant it. I mean, I want to believe it that way because I love sappy love stories (obviously this book isn't ) but, then again he may actually have a deeper meaning to what he said than the few words that came out of his mouth. I really understand that quote, and it's now one of my favorites as well. I think Peeta's saying he doesn't want to die some monster with blood on his hands, and a raging heart filled with hate...and fear. He wants to die knowing that he's still himself, no matter how life (or the Games) change him. He wants to die as the soft bread boy who warms your heart and fills you with hope! (now that's a sappy love story in one, beautiful quote!) He can reflect on us, now, in the realistic view. Before we die, especially if we know in advance, we quickly jump to what we want to do before we die (i.e. making a bucket list). We normally want to die making someone else's life better, or die knowing that your life ended while you were doing something to make you happy. Peeta wanted to be himself, not some publicized murderer for food. UGH! Peeta melts my heart. He joins the allies to lead them away from Katniss. That was the reason he pushed her before Cato! *aaawwwww* I'm finding that he's being Katniss' "Jesus". He gave her bread, most likely gave her sponsors, put his own life at risk (with the Career tributes) to lead them away from who he thinks will win the Hunger Games, AND pushed her away before Cato could see her.
I must read more. This concludes my post.

Oh my word! These 5 chapters are INTENSE! Okay so I'm gonna start with Rue (again), but more over, her planning. I love that she has the clever mind to know that the Career tributes cant survive without food! Like, Katniss and Rue are a bit...adapted (if you get what I mean) to coping with the hunger AND being able to do so with a whole family to help supply for. I'm sorry, but im officially in love with her. I marked a quote that struck me. This quote was said by Katniss when her and Rue were talking about what they like; Rue saying that of all things, she liked music the most. What Katniss said shocked me, "In our world, I rank music somewhere between hair ribbons and rainbows in terms of usefulness" (16.211). I really took this to heart because I practically live in a sea of song after song, and it really shows how harsh these conditions are for them; that they don't even hear some old guy out on the street wailing out some country love song with a banjo! Now, onto Rue's death. I'm not gonna lie, that was a tearjerker while reading. I love how she pushed through her tears, and even stumbled a bit, feeling as it were Prim's last request to sing. I hope those Capitol people are happy. When she looked back towards the boy though, I could tell she wasn't feeling guilty for the most part. After all, he did totally just kill her only source of light and hope in the Games. When she started thinking about how she didn't even know his name and that she knew he had a family at home wanting revenge, I saw her guilt there. She then started thinking about Gale and how it's nothing more than an animal she'd kill for her family, yet the Games still haven't changed her. She did that for protection, not for the joy. When they announced that there can only be two winners from the same district, she then realizes that Peeta has been saving her butt this whole time! I was right! She immediately screams for Peeta. I on the other hand scream (aloud, actually) "STUPID KATNISS!" Oof, I love her but that was extremely risky. When she does find him, he asks for a kiss (I blushed and squealed like the lovebirdie I am.) and she laughs at first, but then she ultimately does. Even though he's badly wounded, I'm still seeing this Bread of life aspect towards the two. She needs him to stay alive to win, and he needs her to nurse him back to that point. The feast is called and she knocks him out with the sleeping medicine, but was that really the reason why the gift was given to her? I'm questioning this and I'll see what I can read to answer this. Gosh, Rachel! Why'd you pik such a sad book?!

Holy crap everything is intense.
Okay, so chapter 15 was about Rue and Katniss teaming up and becoming allies. We first see Katniss has woken up from passing out after the tracker jacker stings' venom affected her. We learn about Rue's home of District 11, the agricuture district. We get a sense that the citizens are also poor like Katniss, which is odd, because they harvest their own food. Rue tells Katniss that they can't eat their own harvest, or the peacekeepers/government will immediatly punish them. So we know these things that Katniss and Rue have in common: Their abilities to know how to find and gather food for themselves are way stronger than the more wealthy districts who get food on their plate everyday without effort. They're like sisters! It was ike Katniss become so much happier when she got the bows and arrows, and allied with Rue. She felt more safe, because her weapons were with her, and she has Rue to talk to and be like her little sister. We even see Katniss waiting and determined for the Careers, anybody, to come after her. In chapter 16, the two allies have a plan of destroying the Career's source of survival, the supplies with the food stacked up by the cornucopia. Now the careers would have to struggle to actually learn how to SURVIVE in the woods. Rue says they have a boy, not a career, from District 3, guarding the stash. The only way the boy is surviving by the Careers is because District 3 is the district of machinary. He must have known how to reset the mines to kill any trespasser. It's actually pretty smart of the Careers, I have to give them credit for it! (: As the plan is in action, Katniss is hiding behind the bush to get a view on the supplies, while the Careers go hunting for whoever (Rue) started the fires. While waiting for the decision on how to get to the supplies, somethng CRAZY happens. We see FOXFACE running towards the supplies, but in an odd manner, hopping from areas and even scared when she stumbled. Succesfully, she took some supplies and ran off. 1. What can you pull out and say about this quiet tribute? What does it say about her character? After watching Foxface, Katniss realizes the mines were reset. She shoots at a sack of apples and..well you know the rest!! 2. We also know one other thing before the Careers took off. Cato somehow hurt Peeta BADLY after the trackjer jacker incident. Do you think he saw Katniss run off with the help of him?
Chapter 17... RUE IS SPEARED BY MARVEL (district 1) !!! ): Seriously I cried. Later, was all about how Katniss was paying her respects for Rue and District 11. Katniss understood on what Peeta meant when he said he didn't want to be "just a piece in their games." The Hunger Games DEHUMANIZES the people, making their deaths rather as entertaining than sad and mournful. But no, Katniss wanted Rue's death as something to remember. I thought the way she officially said goodbye to Rue was so sweet!
The very last thing we know is that Claudious Templesmith announcing that TWO people can win IF they are from the same district.... and the only district pairs left are Katniss and Peeta, and Cato and Clove. 1. Why do you think the Capitol decided to change the rules to this specific rule?
In chapter 19, she finds peeta by a stream... well, he is disguised and covered with mud and moss! His bakery cake decorating skills really paid off. She helps him wash up, and this scene must be really awkward to read about, and it makes you feel awkward for KATNISS, because she has to remove his clothes and wash his body haha! Anyways, they find a place in a cave to settle in. Their intimacy immediatly just grows! We notice something important: Haymitch will send them food IF they give the audience something to see: their romance. The star crossed lovers have reunited. Katniss' FIRST kiss with Peeta was NOT REAL. It was obviously for the audience to see something exciting. In reward, they got food. The only part is... Katniss is the only one who figured out that they only get gifts if she continues the romance. Poor Peeta thinks this is all real!
In chapter 20, we know that Peeta's leg where Cato cut him is getting worse and fatal. He WILL die if not the right treatment is provided. 1. The audience now is focused on Katniss and Peeta, the lovers, out of everything else. So how do you think the capitol decided to play with this factor? That's right, the feast! Not an ordinary feast, but a feast that provides each tribute with something they need BADLY. District 12's bag must be the medicine for Peeta's leg. Katniss is caught between a conflict, she can either stay with Peeta, who threathens to come with her if she goes, and watch him die, OR she can risk her life and save Peeta. With Peeta not cooperating, Haymitch sends her a fluid that will knock somebody out for some time. Katniss knew what that meant. She sneakily mixed the fluid with berries and fed it to Peeta, who found out her plan but was drugged before he could react. 1. What do you think of her plan? 2. We all know this feast is just a way to get the tributes together for a fight. But, I think the capitol wants a show. The hopeless romantic Katniss drugs Peeta and risks her own life to save his. That must be a tune in to see event! Which tribute do you worry MOST on who Katniss might encounter?

Yes, I agree, the last few chapters were some of the best, in my opinoin. There was a lot to talk about!
I think it's really interesting that Rue loves music. You know, in their society, I can't really imagine music even being popular. But, I love how music kind of let's you escape from the world. I guess it could work for Rue, letting her escape from her horrible way of living and just feel great.
And yes, for most girls, the scene of Peeta teasing Katniss with the kiss got me routing for Peeta, and begging Katniss to kiss him! But I HATE the face the first kiss was NOT real. Peeta thought it was, but Katniss did it just to give the world something to watch. It was her way to survive. I think the reason the medicine was given to Katniss was out of Haymitch's plan to bring the audience to their feet. When I first read that chapter, I was like "OH MY GOSH! Katniss you better make it back with the medicine!!!" Like I said in my older post, two lovers fighting for their survival, their motivation was eachother,... it's a thing that would definitley make an audience want more. Props to Haymitch!
I kind of want to scream at Katniss for ACTING for the games! It was just part of the games, her way of surviving. Haha I wonder what Gale was thinking watching them together...

In chapter 21 I love how FoxFace outsmarts everyone by hiding in the cornucopia and grabs her "feast" first. she gets away no one wants to go after her because they have there's to get. I was thankful for thresh to save katniss, I swear if clove killed katniss I was gonna die. I was wandering why Cato was so far away though, ya know in case something ever did happen to clove. I always thought it would be something Peeta had to take, like a pill or something. I personally hate needles so when she stuck it straight in his arms, it sort of scared me.
In chapter 22 I thought it was good that katniss didnt want to have thresh killed. I mean like i guess since she ad rue were good friends, thresh was sort of part of that to, given they were from the same district and cared about each other. When Peeta and Katniss were talking about that field, with tall grass or wheat, they were talking about how thresh is so big now and that there must be bread in that field. I thought, well, there might be large animals, big but not big enough to kill or hurt thresh. I was sure that if there was wheat in there, he ould know exactly what to do to it to make food. I like the story Peeta told Katniss in the cave, how his father loved her mother and how she fell for her dad bc of his singing. and how exacly alike her and her father was in that area. I thought it was all romantic, then of course they got a full course meal. I hated how she thought he was playing the romantic stuff but he actually meant it.
In chapter 23 I didnt like how thresh died by Cato. i mean i wanted Katniss and Peeta to win but like die by cato. No. It made me mad. I liked how Katnis put it as she said she would want him to win if hey didnt. i felt the same way. I like how Peeta made fun of his manners because he had a fork and a knife, well made fun of effie. it was cute. When thy went hunting I was sortof getting upset at katniss bc it wasnt peetas fault. he doesnt know how to hunt. I liked how FoxFace got "tricked" into dieing, how she ate the berries.
In chapter 24 i liked how Peeta was sad the way foxface died because it wasnt like he was meaning to. I didnt like how the game makers drained all the rivers and ponds. when i saw that cato was running and with body armour on him i was like no, no ,really. then when he was running away from something else.. i was like great but.. not so great.
In chapter 25 I liked how katniss figured out that they were "mutts" or mutations after them, but when i found out they were they dead tributes, really alarmed me, then when katniss saw "rue" it made me a little sad. When cato got peta and said if u shoot me we both go down i was like ya know what cato i dont like you very much. Peeta said to shoot cato in the hand, i was like yay thank gosh a solution. i didnt like how they let him suffer thought, like if the dogs havent finished him off after five minutes like you know they can, end his suffering.
Questions: If thresh had killed Katniss, how would you have felt? Would you feel a bit awkward if someone said to you that they've loved you since you were 5, like Peeta said to katniss after tehe story about his father and her mother. How would you have felt bout dseeing your only ally, transformed into a dog that's programmed to kill you?

My thoughts on the last few chapters, especially towards the end of the games was so emotional! OMG WHY THE HECK WOULD THEY USE THE DEAD TRIBUTES AND TURN THEM INTO MONSTERS?!?! That shows how manipulating the Capitol is.
I LOVED the scene where Peeta talks about memories in details he has of Katniss, which surprised Katniss of how much he's been paying attention to her all these years. THEY HAVE THEIR FIRST REAL KISS, no fever, no pain, just a real kiss. Katniss realizes she has feelings for Peeta awwwww!!!!
Sidny, to answer your questions:
1. The only reason Thresh saved Katniss was because of what she did for Rue. I mean, obviously Katniss WOULDN'T die, because it's a trilogy haha. But if Thresh killed Katniss, it would AFFECT other characters. Gale. Prim. Her mom. Most importantly, Peeta. He is drugged and still in that cave dying unless Katniss can make it back with the medicine.
2. I would feel a little awkard if I didn't llike the other person back.... 3. Umm, I would feel sick. HOW COULD THE CAPITOL TAKE LITTLE, INNOCENT RUE AND take her eyes and transform her into some monster trying to kill you?!

Oh no! Sorry, the last time I tried posting, my computer blanked out in the middle of posting and it didn't save. Okay, I'll try and re-think what I typed, answer your questions, AND post my discussion for my make-up for camp.
Ch. 16: 1. Foxface is quite the sly one! I can tell she's pretty good with spying and/or predicting a character's next move. I don't know if this is just me...but I see Foxface as some super thin and tall redhead girl with a pointy nose and hair always pulled back into a slick, low ponytail (good character imagery right there). 2. I think he may have seen Peeta aid Katniss to safety! He may have hurt him because he let her go. Cato may also have been suffering from the effects of the tracker jacker venom. Maybe he was hallucinating Peeta as a threat?
Ch. 17: Yes, I too cried while reading about her death! I completely agree with every statement you said about how the Capitol completely takes the humanity out of these games!
Ch. 18: 1. I think the rule change was all for the purpose of seeing the two "lovers" together again, honestly. That and so that they could speed up the game and have the pairs have a fight.
Ch. 20: 1. I don't like her plan! She's taking advantage of Peeta's cripple-ness! I know it's for the best for both of them, but come on. Don't knock him unconscious. 2. I worry most about Katniss running into Cato, of course. He has some special plan for killing her in some terrible death, with him being the solo killer.

In chapter 26 when they picked peeta and katniss up from the arena i was like thank the lord. I like how detailed katniss's description of the hovercraft was and how she was acting. when the avox came in and gave katniss her food, and katniss didn't know why it was such a small portion, i knew why, its because you haven't eaten! when haymitch told katniss she was in trouble because of what she did in the games i was like your serious right? like havent you put her through enough. she did that because you capitol people were being sly and mean. although when they first said that they could win together she should have known it probably was to good to be true. i wonder whats gonna happen next when the book said the most dangerous part of the hunger games is bout to begin
questions: what was your reaction when katniss found out she was in trouble?

In chapter 27 i loved her replies in th interview, they were smart considering the president hates her now. but i felt bad for peeta, he doesnt know shes in trouble and he really does love her, he just not playing it. I dont get how she never wants him to leave her side but she says she doesnt know if she has feelings for him. it just angers me. when they walked on the rail road tracks and peeta found out she was "playing" him, i felt sooooo bad like seriously katniss, you saw how he acted in the arena after you watched the highlighs and how he acts towards you now! you know he loves you! and u know u like him to. i just felt bad for me, like if i were in his shoes id cry for awhile.
